What did Taipei City Government do about protecting us from Avian Influenza infection?

  1. Active surveillance of animals:
    A.
Migratory birds surveillance: every year from October to April, when migratory birds stay in Taiwan, Wild Bird Society of Taipei which is appointed by Council of Agriculture will collect bird feces as tested samples and send to Animal Health Research Institute for avian influenza virus detection.
B.Sample collective sites surveillance: Since 2006, about 84 sites for sample collection were defined as collective sites to survey bird flu. We appointed a professional organization (School of Veterinary Medicine National Taiwan University) to collect and test the collected samples. Every week, samples from 6-9 bird stores, poultry farms and parks will be collected for bird flu surveillance. In calculation, over 3,000 samples will be collected and exanimated each year.

  2. Disease prevention and propagation
    A.
If poultry farmers discover any abnormal clinical signs, he/she should immediately notify Taipei City Animal Protection Office (TCAPO).
B.Nonscheduled visits of poultry farms, bird stores or poultry wholesale market to enhance the bio-safety and disease prevention level.

  3. Epidemic outbreak of bird flu information collection
We collect and organize worldwide influenza virus infection information, and publish” Avian Influenza Inspection weekly report of Taipei City” every week on the website of TCAPO. We also continuously collect statistic and analyze the pathogen, epidemic regions and prevalent characteristics to prevent the disease as soon as possible.

  4. Emergency notification system
    A.
Establish” Surveillance, Warning and Notification Flow Chart of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza of Taipei City.”
B.Provide “Emergency Inspection Procedure of Malignant epidemic disease of TCAPO.”
C.Set up “Team for Prevention and Treatment of Avian Influenza.”
